CELEBRATE THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1988 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES WITH THE SPIRIT OF MOTION EXHIBITION
CALGARY, AB – The Spirit of Motion exhibition, a multimedia exhibit consisting of 43 pieces of original artwork by artist Bill Brownridge, open on September 22 at the base of the Calgary Tower. The exhibition was created in partnership between the Bill Brownridge Family, the Calgary Tower Facilities Ltd., and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games.
The exhibit features 10 original artwork pieces and 33 mono prints created for the bid book that led to the awarding of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games to Calgary. In addition, a digital interactive kiosk showcases the stories, artefacts, and videos of the five athletes that medalled for Canada at the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, as well as a featured section on Bill Brownridge and 1988 Olympic Treasures.
“Join us, the Brownridge family, as we recall the 1980s and Calgary, a city of fresh hope and new dreams, which ultimately garnered the 1988 Winter Olympics. As revealed in the artwork here, such gatherings speak to our very soul, speak of that eternal, poetic struggle to push limits, yet temper that force with spirit. Poetry in motion, and spirit – this is us. Please enjoy!” said David Brownridge, son of artist Bill Brownridge.
Janice Smith, Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, added, “Working alongside the Bill Brownridge Family to create The Spirit of Motion exhibition has truly been inspirational. Joining the incredible artwork of Bill Brownridge and a digital experience has been a unique journey. Working with the Calgary Tower team to host this exhibition for the next year at the base of the Tower is a very special opportunity. We encourage all visitors to re-live some memories and learn more about the 1988 Olympic Winter Games.”
“We are honoured to be hosting the ‘Spirit of Motion’ exhibition by Mr. Brownridge, a stunning portrayal of the sports that defined Calgary’s 1988 Winter Olympic bid,” says Katie Urness, General Manager, Calgary Tower. “As a venue deeply rooted in Olympic history, we are thrilled to partner with Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame to share this iconic collection with our visitors and to celebrate the enduring spirit of sport and art.”
Beginning today, The Spirit of Motion exhibition will be open to the public for free for the next year. Visitors are encouraged to come and experience the artwork and history of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games.
